Psyche by SteveDelamare Psyche by SteveDelamare
Inspired by John Waterhouses'
"Psyche opening the box"
This is my own version.

I've tried to add all the elements that make up the Psyche and Cupid story, which is far too long to explain here...
but explained here :) [link]
(bonus points if you can work out why I've added a butterfly in the picture before you look at the explanation)

Je connaissais le mythe sous la forme d'un flacon d'onguent donné par Perséphone.
Mais vous donnez de Waterhouses une bien jolie version avec l'ensemble des symboles entourant la future déesse pardonnée par Aphrodite

Do you have any tutorials on how you paint? I'd really love to learn how to paint the way you do!

Your work on the figure is outstanding. You really have that ancient Greek atmosphere that I'd expect from a mythological painting. :D I love how consistent the lighting turned out, too

Thanks for the enquiry. The print should now be available in rolled canvas larger sizes (if I've pressed the right buttons) :)

Originally Greek word anima has a meaning of a buttefly, spirit, soul, movement and air. Or we use it in this meaning today, I am not sure, but the connection between your thinking-emotional self - aka soul - and a butterfly is thus quite obvious.

Pandora's butterfly of hope (that possibly Cupid sends her)? Or is that Cupid in a different form watching after her?

Butterfly for virginal innocence? Although I'd think it is also there since the older artists when giving her wings gave her the wings of a butterfly!

Now I will read the explanation. lol

Lol, soul, of course why didn't I think of that. XD I even had a whole Literature class on it once upon a time (Plath or Keats, can't recall. Maybe Neruda)

This is so gorgeous. The lighting and coloring are so delicate. I really love the detail on her face and hair. She sort of reminds me of Fiona from Shrek. xD

Was there also a box-opening scene in the Psyche and Cupid myth? I always associated such a scene with Pandora (Pandora's box). Anways, beautiful work!

This truly looks like a pre-raffaelite painting
... I love Waterhouse and that's quite a match.
Thanks for posting it.
That's art in it's right name!

And for the butterfly ... ψυχή is a representation of the anima, the spirit or soul in theology and philosophy.
The butterfly transforming from pupae to adult form is a metaphore connected.
And there's Leptosia nina or Psyche of the Familia Pieridae,
a silky white butterfly with a habitat in Southeast Asia and India.
And a lot of things connected to entomology as well. Got it right?

PS: which butterfly did you choose instead? It looks like Celastrina mixed with Aglais. Pretty!
